MARC MARON ‘The social media generation’
what fucking garbage
I mean asking for acknowledgement and INTERACTING WITH OTHERS is fucking important I mean it’s the fundamental building block of u know HUMAN SOCIALITY INTERACTION FUCK YOU
it’s kind of REALLY offensive, like beyond-the-pale-go-climb-into-and-sleep-in-a-dumpster-of-your-own-fucking-volition offensive, to compare serious drug addiction to a desire to socialize with people that’s mediated differently from fucking chop[ping down trees in the woods or something
WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST WE DO WOULD U HAVE US HOLD OUT OUR SAD HANDS INTO THE AETHER AND GRASP AT AIR WHILE LOOKING EACH OTHER IN THE EYES AND SIGHING AND TALKING ABOUT, OH I DON’T KNOW, THE WEATHER
i dunno man this is some bullshitty nonsense garbage and it’s fucked up and offensive and like, it sounds almost exactly the same as those dumbass things that rant about like how MEDICATED we are and it “takes the poetry” out of our life or something I don’t know what the fuck you want what is your fucking PROBLMe plz stop forever
i read this whole bad comic before i realized it is zen pencils, whic belongs in a dumpster
on the bright side without social networking or the internet there wouldn’t be any zenpencils either
So I read the comment and though “Huh that has a point”, and was surprised to see some pretentious word-vomit disguised as a rant whose sole aim seems to be to drain the word “offended” of all meaning.
Metaphor is not simile. If you can’t deal with drug addiction being used in such a metaphor you may have a sensitivity problem.
I mean (and I’m going to paraphrase a lot here) science has proven that the reward centres of the brain are stimulated by such social media feedback just as they are stimulated by addictions to gambling and shoplifting (I’ll steer clear of drug abuse because of the other chemicals at play, but you get the point). I must note however I agree the final panel is a bit tactless in it’s composition.
I read the comic as simply pointing out this sort of thing. That for all it’s apparent novelty, social media fulfils a need we have always had.
A lot of attention is given to Tumblr’s rabid hunger to be outraged in regards to issues of social justice, but this is a kind that pisses me off just as much. This idea that the commenter knows better, is smarter and more incisive. Most of all, however, they want to be cynical. Well, fuck that. If you’re not willing to at least try and see the positive message in a work like this, you need to have a good hard look at your close-minded self.
To be honest I agree with the comic even though socializing is a healthy thing it can become unhealthy if all we’re doing is seeking attention and because of a lack thereof in your real life. For the past three months I was on that boat. I became more active then ever on social media sites to get attention because I severely lacked it in my life. I have to say it almost ruined me.
It’s one thing to make a status waiting for hearts and comments. it’s another to have full conversations with people and actually getting to know each other and talking about the day. Within that time span I didn’t really want to have a conversation with people. I just wanted the acknowledgement that I was here and that someone liked what I posted. I feel social media can be great but it can just as easily become a drug as well. Though the last panel could use some work.
